After a two-year break, the Queer Ball will be held again

On 10 September 2022, the fourth edition of the ball will take place in Prague and on 17 September 2022, the ninth edition of the ball for the LGBTQ+ community and its friends will take place in Brno. STUD, z.s., which organizes the ball, continues the successful tradition of the event organized for many years in both cities with the aim of reviving the social and cultural queer scene in Prague and Brno with a ball that every visitor can enjoy with his or her partner without shame and prejudice.

“For two years we could not organize balls due to the restrictions related to covid, so we decided to organize balls in non-traditional September dates. We would like to allow people to enjoy balls after a long time and would like to continue organizing this social ball event.” says Marek Christ from the organizing team.

The organizers have decided that this year’s Queer Ball will be themed “Once Upon A Time”. This means that visitors will be able to engage their imagination and be inspired by fairytale and fictional characters when choosing a suitable ball outfit.

“Each of our balls has a theme, we are continuing the traditional Queer Ball concept that has worked so well in previous years. We hope that visitors will once again be clever and creative and be able to tune their outfit to fit the theme of the ball. Ball visitors always appreciate the costumes and the imagination that other guests put into preparing their costume. It adds much more value to the ball and people identify more with the event,” adds Marek Christ.

At both balls in Prague and Brno, visitors will be able to dance on the dance floor for the whole evening, during which there will be an accompanying programme including a raffle and dance and artistic performances. Guests will be accompanied throughout the evening by musicians from the band Eremy and well-known hosts. In Prague it will be the host of CNN Prima News Josef Mádle and in Brno it will be the theatre, film and TV actor Saša Rašilov.

The patronage of the ball in Prague was taken over by the mayor of the capital Zdeněk Hřib. The Queer Ball in Brno is held under the auspices of Tomáš Koláčný, 2nd Deputy Mayor of Brno.

“We are already looking forward to seeing all the visitors of both Queer Balls and we hope that the balls will be as successful as the ones before the covid break” adds Marek Christ in conclusion.

Today, December 17th, 2021, after a long time, a new gay club opened in Prague. Bedřich Kuvík, took over the former Placebo club at Mikovcova 12, in Prague’s Vinohrady district.

Lots of famous people arrived to the opening party. Superstar Gizela Kova and others took care of the amazing drag show. The venue is open every day from the afternoon, so far only until 22:00, but thanks to the new government, we can look forward to regular parties after 10 pm, which we are all used to.

Prague Pride 2019 celebrates the Stonewall Riots anniversary and invites queer people not to be afraid to be seen

This year, Pride festivals around the world are commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, a milestone in the history of the LGBT+ movement. The events following the police raid in New York’s Stonewall Inn gay club in 1969 brought the fight for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people into the streets – queer people have gained a strong voice that begun to be heard. The Prague Pride Festival, which will happen between 5 and 11 August this year, will also dip into these important historical moments.

“Under the Iron Curtain, the Czech Republic moved at a different pace. Even though homosexuality has been decriminalized here in 1962, the Stonewall Riots still hold an important message for us: to publicly join the queer community that is very diverse and contrasted,” said Hana Kulhánková, Director of LGBT+ Festival Prague Pride.

Mutual support and collaboration across the community is the leitmotif of this year’s festival. Only the visibility of a close-knitted crowd has the power to attract the attention of both the public and political elites and bring change. “A number of transgender people and lesbians, alongside the gays, also played an important role during the events at the Stonewall Inn, but these people were soon forgotten. This must not happen again,” says Hana Kulhánková and reveals: “Therefore, during the festival week, individual queer sub-communities will be given more space – i.e. not only gays and lesbians, but also transgender and non-binary people, bisexual, asexual and for the first time, this year intersex people as well.” An Italian actress, politician and trans activist Vladimir Luxuria, a British model and asexual activist Yasmin Benoit will both appear at the festival. Czech audience can also expect a Skype discussion with intersex activist Pidgeon Pagonis.

Intergenerational encounters are an important link between past and present. Although LGBT+ activism has fully developed in our country only after the Velvet Revolution, there are several generations of queer people that are unfortunately living in relatively separate worlds. We believe that older LGBT+ people have so much to share with the younger generation and that their personal stories can be of benefit to the youngest queers, who’s experience is usually different – with earlier coming out and the possibility of finding any information online. That is the main reason behind launching Pride Life, a multi-day program, which will take place at the headquarters of Life 90 organization providing support to seniors and will be open to participants of all ages. Visitors can look forward to experiencing a recollection on the Stonewall protests with Robert Vano, who himself took a part in the riot, a retro disco, an intergenerational brunch, and a discussion of the current situation of older LGBT+ people.

The history, present and the expectations of the future are intertwined within the Prague Pride 2019 campaign. The hands of two women or two men are reaching out to touch each other, but there is still some distance kept between them. The headline Together Within Reach refers to the fact that even today, 57 years after the abolition of the homosexuality’s punishment in Czechoslovakia, many of the same-sex couples still prefer to refrain from public display of affection, like holding hands. This year’s festival’s call for action is to change that. This would require for the LGBT+ people to not only be present and visible in the public space, but also to be supported by their allies from the heterosexual majority. They too should grab their queer friend’s hand and publicly express their support.

The Prague Pride campaign was created by 2FRESH creative agency. “The chosen creative idea comes from an insight that reflects the ambivalent feelings of the community – a moment when something is so close, but at the same time, cannot be reached,” explains Lukáš Rýdl, Strategy Director at 2FRESH. “Thanks to the findings of the target group study, we know that even the most common situations, such as holding hands, are still causing contradictory reactions when in public. And that calls for support!” he concludes.

The whole length of the festival’s program will be published in July, offering more than 130 events. Once again, there will also be a release of the Prague Pride Mag with 48 pages about the program and LGBT+ issues. Most of the Prague Pride events are FREE.

The festival will be traditionally kicked off with an opening concert at Pride Village on Střelecký island on Monday, August 5th. The headliner will be Daniela Sea, known most memorably due to her role of trans person Max in the cult series The L Word, here performing as a part of a musical duo with Swedish DJ Gunn Lundemo. Among other featured artists will be Kapitán Demo and Leopold, a pioneer of genderless fashion who represents new generation of proud LGBTIQ* artists. Older generations will be represented by 80-year-old DJ Wika from Poland and Elpida choir accompanied by Never Sol in their joint project OLD’s COOL.

The Rainbow Parade will take place on Saturday, August 10^th. The parade will return to its former route, which leads from Wenceslas Square to Na Příkopě Street and then through Náměstí Republiky, Revoluční, Dvořák Embankments and Čech’s Bridge to the stairs that lead to Letná park. All the fun will continue in Pride Park at Letná Plain until 22 pm. The queer program includes several music stages, a tent where a Pride Ball vogue dance competition will take place, a Ferris Wheel and the community zone with specially designated places for people to debate and get to know each other.

The festival is held under the auspices of the Prague Mayor Zdeněk Hřib, Deputy Mayor of the Prague 1 City District Pavel Nazarský, Deputy Mayor for Culture, Sport and Neighbourhood Relations of Prague 7 Hana Třeštíková and Councillor of Prague 1 Petr Kučera.

Hi Jakub and Dennis, Honilek.cz has learned that there will be some changes regarding your club, what changes will that be in particular?

The bar will be taken over by a new operator, who will remove our interesting and original concept focussed on chemistry.

What made you open a gay club in Prague?
With respect to what we saw in Prague, we wanted to open a nice place that would not look like a typical gay bar. At the same time, we wanted it to be modern, clean, with an interesting concept and that would be open to all regardless of orientation. We were also dissatisfied with the current dance clubs and we wanted a bar/club with modern music and quality drinks.

And how was it in the beginning?
We moved to Prague, a city where we did not know anyone at all. We found a beautiful but empty space. Without any experience, we made our own efforts to rebuild it. After two months of endless and exhausting work, we opened the bar.

What has happened and what did not work?
We think we managed to fill the bar with a pleasant clientele that we liked. Thanks to the original concept and entertaining performance, we managed to get a very nice rating and reviews. Unfortunately, we failed to realize the dance floor with regard to the location of the bar in a historic residential building, even though we were promised everything at the beginning.

What was the attendance?

The weekends were mostly full, sometimes the bar literally cracked at the seams. During the week, visitor numbers were similar to the other bars located nearby. The bar was opened for a relatively short time and we were satisfied with the attendance.

How will Chemistry run in the coming days?
Chemistry will be closed for a few days. The new operator should set up a business under a new name at the beginning of February.

What future plans do you have in your personal and working life? What would you advise people who want to open a gay club in Prague?
We would like to have a rest from the bar business, which has greatly restricted us in our personal life. We were both owners and employees, and it is often quite psychologically demanding, and for gay clients twice as much

Alcatraz Club with more than 17-year tradition is closed during the summer holidays, at that same time the new venue was in reconstruction in the center of Prague near Wenceslas Square. On friday, October 21, 2016, owner Karel Krůza opened new Alcatraz! The new club is bigger compared to the old, single-storey and is located in the medieval cellars, included old well. The fifth Prague Pride, describing the life of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, and transgenders (LGBT), that will start on August 10 will offer 120 events this year, festival director Katerina Saparova said yesterday.
On August 15, the Prague Pride will culminate with a march in the Prague center, Saparova said.
The organisers want to attract more heterosexuals to concerts, discussions, film screenings and theatrical performances than in the past years, she added.

“More than ever, this year’s festival campaign will target the majority society,” Saparova said.
“It is the target of the message that all are equal. We are all people,” Saparova said.
This year, the organisers chose the slogan “We all have a rainbow inside” and chose snaps from a thermographic camera.
“Although gays and lesbians are denoted as queer, when seen by a thermographic camera, we are all same,” Saparova said.
“Suddenly, there are no differences between us. It makes no sense to search for them among people,” she added.
A thermo filter can be utilised by Facebook users. With it, they can change their profile photo in order to support the motto of the festival.
On Monday morning alone, over 500 people modified their Facebook photos, Saparova said.
This year, the festival will be concentrated in three places. The festival village is situated on the Strelecky island, where a concert will officially open the show on Monday with Czech lesbian singer Aneta Langerova and the Austrian bearded singer Conchita Wurst.
Discussions will be held in the festival centre in the Langhans House.

The Pride Theater in the Svandovo theatre will offer several performances and debates with their creators.
At first, two events were scheduled to be held in a parish. However, Prague Archbishop Dominik Duka has banned a discussion on bullying in the church and the screening of a Polish film on a Catholic priest who falls in love with a boy.
The one-week event will culminate with the Saturday pride march in the Prague centre. It will set out from Wenceslas Square at 13:00 and continue through the streets in the Prague center.
The Prague Pride festival was held for the first time in August 2011. It sparked off strong protests by conservative groups. Then president Vaclav Klaus called for the fight against the ideology of “homosexualism”, which he said the festival promoted.
In the following years, the protests were rather small. Some groups plan to organise protests in places that the marchers are going to pass.
As this year, too, protests are expected, Prague Pride organisers are collaborating with the police.

On Friday, April 3 at 2015 Club Stage opened new venue at address Italská 25. Stage moved from Štepanská street in the city center to Vinohrady, closer to other gay clubs. At opening party enterprise was crowded, see the photoreport.

At the end of March 2015, after nearly four years of operation of the club Stage  in Štěpánská street closing down. Bedřich Kuvik said, I closed down old Stage  because of lower attendance and increased costs, especially rent space in the center. Bedřich therefore decided to find a new space and he succeeded. On Friday April 3 from 20:00  new Stage opens! With the new venue the concept going to be changed, not anymore classic disco in the basebent and restaurant upstairs, the new venue will be a dance bar with kitchen for 100 guests, which will be united on the ground floor at street level. In May  you can look forward to the garden!

New Stage, is located at Italská street 25 , just a few steps from Vinohradská avenue, open every day from 2PM  tll 2AM and some days will be opened even later. The price level will be same as last location.

Great news.   AXM Group, a Scottish-based company (part of Enterprise Entertainment Scotland Ltd.)  will be opening a new gay club in the former Farrango Club — previously Club Valentino and ON Club space — on Thursday night, 30 April 2015.   AXM Club, located at 40 Vinohradska, Praha 2, next to Celebrity Café, is in the heart of the Praha gay area.

The managing director and owner of AXM Group, Lord Haydn Pope, said that AXM serves the European gay community with five venues in Manchester, UK, Glasgow, Scotland, and the island of Malta – three gay clubs, a gay bar, and an exclusive gay boutique hotel in Malta.   The web site for AMX Group is http://www.axmgroup.co.uk/ The web site lists all of the company’s gay operations and briefly highlights the new venue in Prague.

Haydon Pope said that AXM chose Praha because it is famous, relaxing, comfortable, and also because the city has a very liberal population.  The new club will not tolerate any homophobic or anti-social behavior.  Pope wants the new club to have a fun, party atmosphere, dancing, contests, drag queens, performing artists from abroad, and much more.  Pope wants to bring something new to Praha and to reinforce the gay life.  Also, AXM will also have a garden for guests to enjoy, which presumably will the on a deck on the street, which had been unfortunately removed by owners of the previous clubs there.

AXM will participate in Prague Pride through its AXM Track, which will be matched in style with the club and clearly identified as AXM Club.  During Prague Pride, 10-16 August, Club AXM will have special parties every night, attracting international performing artists.

With this new, well financed, imaginative, and experienced gay management, AXM Club could very well turn around the declining gay scene in Praha.   We hope so.

On March 2015 Stage club will close. The club in Stepanska Street was opened in 2011 and loosely followed the club Valentino. But it is not the very end of the club. A new and improved Stage will open in Vinohrady near other gay clubs. The new concept will not compete with them, but complement them. We can expect New Stage in the April 2015. Over the last few months of the Prague gay “pub” scene has changed a lot. The first club bankropt was The George at Vinohrady during the Prague Pride in August 2013, next on was popular Queens, which closed at the end of November. It should be noted that both clubs were opened short time and a lot of people never notice they are exist. Month after them, just before New Year’s Eve is Wild boys club been transformed from private club for gay men to a private club for men (Straight club with go go ladies)

This year, after nine years of successful existence ended Latimerie. After shortening the opening hours and skipped a few weekends for a while and ended Fenoman. Miraculously endured until recently, mutant call Valentino, they originally wanted to build on the same style like ex Valentino, then subsequently use the strategic locations Radio-palace, where he was preparing the opening of Club Max. In early April 2014, Valentino eventually garnered, in addition, in the lower part of the building opened Max, but the desired effect did not take place, on the contrary, the few short of gays who are also on Friday night goes down to Termax club.

In early May 2014 Valentino failed to pay more rent and house owners have entered into a sealed space. In 2005 Ladislav Netolický (former co-owner of Bar 21) opened Latimerie bar. At this time, and in fact even today, it was clean and modern. It was very crowded, where themed parties, birthday, contest, raffle, travesty, and plenty of other events took place. The target group were residents around 30-50 years of age. The economy is not inexorable and after many successful years, in less favourable recent times the bar was not able to continue. Friday 21st February 2014 was the official closing party which was really crowded, but the very last dance on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 captured by Honilek.cz - Look at the photo report!

For more than a year Prague missed a big gay dance club. Wait no longer! In March club Max will open on Vinohradska 40! The area of the former On Club, Valentino, Gejzeer has been completely refurnished and looks like Prague residents and tourists will enjoy a really good club in Western Europe style. Robert Vůjtek of the Max team provided Honilek.cz an interview.

The question that most readers are interested about is when the club opens, and what is happening at the opening party?

The club will be open in March, the exact dates will be published within 10 days. At the opening we are preparing an Opening White Party.

What the guests can look forward to? It’s better than Termix? What about music & darkrooms?

The novelty in the club include a maze in the darkroom area, inspiring nooks and opening some areas that have been previously closed. Then we adjusted spaces too, incorporating a non-smoking area, to increase the number of visitors. We have also prepared for visitors an active ice wall that will be able to show 3D screenings and programmed elements.

Club Max offers two bars, a large main bar with beer, so that visitors only wait the shortest possible time. Club Max will be an alternative Club Termix. We would like to focus on another segment of gay clientele who seek a different type of music than what is produced in the Club Termix. We seek to invite visitors to dance music such as house Disco, Chill-out, Tech house, or for special parties with a different music production. In thematic parties DJ’s from Czech and Europe will be invited. Also, we expect that there will have the opportunity for novice DJs.

In August 2013 The George club closed, and few months later on November, the newly opened club Queens club closed too. Since first January Wild boys is going to change, it will be for girls, not for boys anymore.

Another place which will close is Cafe Muzeum in Febuary, one of the oldest gay café in Prague. But it will close only for a month, for a big reconstruction, which the new operator Miloš is planning.

The fourth edition of the Prague Gay Map by GayPride.cz—a map covering gay and gay-friendly establishments in Prague—has been released and will guide tourists from abroad as well as Czech non-locals around gay Prague. As always, the map is available free of charge.

The map features a complete list of Prague’s gay and gay-friendly bars, clubs, cafés, restaurants, and other venues, which are increasingly frequented by our hetrosexual neighbours. Moreover, the map will also navigate its users to the main gay events over the next couple of months.

As the map has become more popular over the past years, 25,000 copies have been printed of the latest edition (a 25% increase on last year’s issue); it will also be available in more locations. “For the fourth edition, we have even more distribution partners than before; those who would like to get a copy can pick one of an increasing number of tourist information centers, and also at various popular tourist locations thanks to the Pražská informační služba [Prague‘s official tourist bureau],“ reveals Jakub Košmider, general manager of the project. A digital version is available online, making it easy to print at home or download to all kinds of electronic devices.

Prague Gay Map was issued for the first time in 2010; since then it has not only gained more advertisers, but has also started cooperation with multiple institutions, commercial and non-commercial. Since the last issue, many new small improvements have been introduced that will surely be welcomed by all gay tourists.

It was a beautiful autumn evening in 2005, we went to dance in Gejzeer and Termix, and then it happened, on Friday 21st October 2005 a new gay club Valentino opened. At the time of opening this club caused a lot of changes. A lot of smaller clubs disappeared within a few months. On January 2006 the legendary Gejzeer, which was opened in 1996, went bankrupt. January 20, 2006 the owner of Valentino, Bedřich Kuvík, took over the premises of the former Gejzeer and this merger created a unique three-floor space. Before the first Prague Pride in August 2011, the cafe and upper middle dance floor re-opened and two months later, under the name On Club. http://www.honilek.cz/2011/10/10/on_club_opening/ Due to the economic crisis and high drink prices, the number of customers shrank, despite a couple of attempts to revive the club.

9th August 2013, after more than half a year when a lot of people have few clubbing options, Valentino reopens thanks to Karel Lipka, who will operate the club. On Friday 26 April was the birthday party Web Honilek.cz. Web Honilek celebrated the 12th birthday, there’s longest-functioning web in Czech with Slovak Republic.

I guess all of us who have experienced coming-out have once stumbled upon Honilek.cz. Those of us who experimented “before the Internet” appreciated the start of one of the first websites for people interested in the same sex. This website had been a source of special advertisements for a lot of people. It is great that it is still one of the world’s best queer websites. Friends Club has already been working with the website for a long time and recently agreed to collaborate on a party organized by HONILEK.CZ.

In Prague has opened a new gay club, called the Queen’s on street Žitná nr. 41.  VIP opening party been on Saturday 20TH April 2013.

The club is brand new, after extensive renovations previous Jambo club, club Meli Melo and Club Bogota (Previous names of places). In the upper part of the club’s cloakroom, in the future they plan daily café. In the lower area is bar with a dance floor and seating area. Club at the opening party functioned at 100% (beverage menu, credit cards, fully functional bar, sufficient personnel) price level belongs to the upper middle class (compared to prices in other gay club in Prague)¨

Oficial opening party will be on saturday 27th April 2013.

Photo of police cars is one of the last days, before the ON Club was closed. It was January 1st at 7 o’clock in the morning, when someone reported a bomb in the club, no explosive devices but found. No one at that time had any idea that it was the penultimate party in ON club.

Friday, 5 January 2013 was the downstairs floor Closing party with drinks sold at a discount of up to 60%.

Last year the first ever Prague Pride was organized amid political controversy, when Czech president Václav Klaus openly criticized having a Pride event in the capital of the Czech Republic. In spite of his statements the first Prague Pride was an overwhelming success, with more than 25.000 visitors. The event turned out to be a human rights manifestation as well as a celebration all over the city, which had a lasting impression on all those present.

Prague Pride 2012 will be held from 13 to 19 August 2012 on various attractive locations in the Czech capital. The ambition of the organizing team is to attract an even higher number of visitors than last year. With 7 days filled with entertainment, debates, concerts, exhibitions, theatre and more, Prague Pride 2012 will represent the Czech LGBT+ community in its full colour and diversity. With Prague Pride still being a relatively new event, it has a fresh atmosphere of activism combined with fun, which can no longer be found in many other, more commercial Prides.

The theme of this year festival is “Bringing our colours together” with the aim to introduce the general public to the LGBT communities that are usually hidden from the public eye, such as LGBT Roma, disabled or transgender persons.

The highlight of the festival will be the parade through the city centre and the consecutive concert at Střelecký Island on Saturday the 18th of August. The route of the Parade will take the participants from the famous Wenceslav square to the beautiful Střelekcy Island, where a concert will be held with many local and international stars.

“We want to show the Czech society as well as visitors from abroad that we will continue to put Prague on the map as Central and Eastern Europe’s capital of diversity and as one of Europe’s main LGBT travel destinations.“ the director of the festival Czeslaw Walek says. By giving Prague Pride 2012 his auspices, the mayor of Prague acknowledges the significance of its LGBT community, with Prague Pride becoming a tradition in Europe’s LGBT summer season.

Last Saturday night ON Club held Rolling Balls, a special party which will be repeated once every two months.

International DJs- Pagano (UK), Andi Mik (A), and Sound Tropez (CZ) played sets. This party started a cooperation between ON Club and the Decadance team. Another party is planned for Saturday, where admission will be granted only to men and boys.

The largest Czech gay club, ON CLUB, is pleased to announce that after various personnel changes, we have now commenced our collaboration with the BTL Agency – the creator of the successful DECADANCE and TRANCEFUSION parties and a co-organiser of major programmes running side-by-side with Prague Pride 2011.

The result of this collaboration will be a completely new programme concept for the club, starting in December 2011. The BTL Agency will prepare a two-month programme for visitors to the club that will include major turnkey events to be repeated several times each year, thus becoming an ON CLUB “showcase”. You can look forward to the regular circuit party featuring foreign gay DJs, special theme club nights, unique men only parties and many other surprises. We hope that our new programme will be everyone’s cup of tea and that ON CLUB will become, after some costly reconstruction, a regular entertainment venue. We will shortly be presenting the complete programme for December and will gradually begin to reveal details of individual events. You can rest assured that we are working on many hot nights that will be just for YOU! Make a note in your diary for the first weekend in December when we will finally be able to present to you our plans that we have been working on for some weeks now!

The iBoys party returned to Prague after a long break, this time on the newly opened On Club. (Iboys.cz is the Czech gay dating website). On the two lower floors, there were several DJs playing, go-go dancers, and a show where visitors could watch an erotic massage taking place. The whole event was presided over by top Drag Queen DJ - DIVA NOXX. In the café area, iBoys website members could have their profile photos certified..
